His occupation was Labourer when he enlisted at Camden in July 1915 and served as Signaler in the 18th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Australia on 'Themistocles' 5 October 1915 and arrived in France via Alexandria in March 1916. Hilton's brother Corporal Bert Chesham also served and returned in August 1919 after four years service. His uncle Edwin Chesham served from 1917 to 1919. Bartley Horace Chesham served from July 1916 to June 1918. He was wounded in action in France and returned to Australia. Ernest John Chesham served from Janruary 1916 to August 1919. They were both cousins of Hilton. Hilton suffered from Trench Foot in November 1916 in the field in France and was treated at the Field Ambulance. On 13 March 1917 he was again admitted to hospital with Trench Fever and was back in the field at the end of March. Lance Corporal Hilton John CHESHAM was killed in action at Corbie in France on 14 May 1918 age 27. |
